概要
· The U.S. added 57,000 non-farm payroll jobs in June, below the market expectation of around 110,000, with a combined downward revision of 74,000 for April and May.
· The unemployment rate dropped to 4.2%, but the labor force participation rate also fell to 61.5%, which the market interprets as a more dovish policy signal.
· Related assets: gold, U.S. bonds, the U.S. dollar, Bitcoin, and rate-sensitive assets.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released the June Employment Report on July 2nd, showing that only 57,000 non-farm jobs were added in the U.S. in June, significantly below the market's previous expectation of over 110,000.
Normally, a drop in the unemployment rate to 4.2% would seem like good news. However, after the data was released, the U.S. dollar weakened, U.S. bond yields declined, and gold rose. The market's trading direction is more aligned with reducing tightening bets and reconsidering potential rate cuts.
This report did not directly prove that the U.S. economy is entering a recession. What it changed is an anchor that has supported a hawkish expectation over the past few months: that the job market is still strong enough for the Fed to maintain high rates.
The most direct impact of this jobs report is that there were too few new positions added, and the previous data was not as robust as imagined.
In June, only 57,000 non-farm jobs were added, below market expectations. April's data was revised down from 179,000 to 148,000, and May's from 172,000 to 129,000, totaling a downward revision of 74,000.
If a single month of lower-than-expected non-farm payrolls can still be explained as short-term noise, the significance changes when low data is combined with revisions. It indicates that the labor market cooling may not have started in June but rather the old data did not fully reflect it.
Previously, one of the reasons the Fed maintained high rates and even kept the option of hiking was that the job market could withstand a tightening environment. Now, this reason has weakened, and the rate market will naturally give more weight to a dovish policy path.
Rate futures trading reflects the Fed's future actions. The weaker the job market, the less need for further rate hikes, making discussions on future rate cuts more likely. This change will push down the U.S. dollar and short-term U.S. bond yields while supporting assets sensitive to real interest rates like gold.
The most easily misinterpreted figure this time is the unemployment rate.
